  • Be part of a generational technology shift as we embark on a new data platform
  • Based in Auckland (Parnell or Highbrook) or Wellington CBD

Here at NZ Post, we have an enterprise-wide ambition to ensure that data underpins our customer and employee experience.  We have a vision of building a universally data smart organisation where the best of machines and humans collaborate to drive experience, efficiency and profit. To achieve this mission, we must have easy access to data that meets the speed of our business.

This is an ambitious vision that requires our Data & Analytics team to have a consultative approach, led by subject matter experts. Our team is committed to being proactive, business focused and working cross-functionally. We are trusted business advisors with a reputation for innovative problem solving and delivering exceptional value with our data products.

We are doubling our investment in data management and advanced analytics to build a pathway towards a proactive, predictive, automated, and personalised future…and we are looking for a new Senior Data Engineer to join us!

The role

Reporting to our Head of Data Engineering, you'll be part of a team of six other Senior Data Engineers focussed on designing and delivering valuable data products and solutions to the business. You'll use innovative tools, techniques and architectures to automate the most-common, repeatable and tedious data preparation and integration tasks, minimising manual and error-prone processes and improve productivity.

Our Senior Data Engineers play a key role in ingesting raw data and operationalising NZ Post's most valuable data and analytics products. We work in cross-functional squads with other professionals to build integrated and reusable data pipelines and transformations that enable faster data access, integrated data reuse and improved time-to-solution. A key part of the role is being responsible for moving these data pipelines (including transformations) effectively into production and making curated data sets available for key data and analytics consumers e.g. business/data analysts, data scientists.

What we are looking for

We're seeking a data professional who can demonstrate their solid work experience in data management disciplines including data integration, modelling, optimization, and other areas directly relevant to data engineering responsibilities and tasks.

You'll be an energetic self-starter, have great people skills and be proud of that work that you do. You'll be confident, have good judgement and a sense of urgency. Your collaborative and creative approach will be highly valued in this role.

In your toolbox, you'll have the following:

  • Advanced analytics tools for object-oriented/object function scripting using languages such as Python, Java, C++, Scala – or similar technologies
  • Experience in Continuous Integration and Continuous Development
  • Strong ability to design, build and manage data pipelines for data structures encompassing data transformation, data models, schemas, metadata and workload management.
  • Strong experience with popular database programming languages including SQL, PL/SQL for relational databases.
  • Strong experience in working with large, heterogeneous datasets in building and optimizing data pipelines, pipeline architectures and integrated datasets using traditional data integration technologies. These should include ETL/ELT, data replication/CDC, message-oriented data movement, API design and access and upcoming data ingestion and integration technologies such as stream data integration and data virtualization.

This is an incredible opportunity to work with one of New Zealand's largest data sets at a time when we are looking to bring in the most advanced and innovative new platform that we can. This opportunity won't come up very often, so join us and make a tangible impact in our iconic organisation.
